ABSTRACT

Anxiety disorders are currently a major psychiatric and social problem, the mechanisms of which have been only partially elucidated. The hippocampus serves as a major target of stress mediators and is closely related to anxiety modulation. Yet so far, its complex anatomy has been a challenge for research on the mechanisms of anxiety regulation. Recent advances in imaging, virus tracking, and optogenetics/chemogenetics have permitted elucidation of the activity, connectivity, and function of specific cell types within the hippocampus and its connected brain regions, providing mechanistic insights into the elaborate organization of the hippocampal circuitry underlying anxiety. Studies of hippocampal neurotransmitter systems, including glutamatergic, GABAergic, cholinergic, dopaminergic, and serotonergic systems, have contributed to the interpretation of the underlying neural mechanisms of anxiety. Neuropeptides and neuroinflammatory factors are also involved in anxiety modulation. This review comprehensively summarizes the hippocampal mechanisms associated with anxiety modulation, based on molecular, cellular, and circuit properties, to provide tailored targets for future anxiety treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among elderly people in communities of Nanning, so as to provide scientific basis for the formulation of MCI early intervention measures. Methods A total of sample of 3 000 elderly people aged 60 or above living in Nanning area were sampled out using the method of cluster random sampling from three communities in Nanning. The Beijing version of the montreal cognitive assessment (MOCA-BJ) was administered by face to face interview. Results 833 MCI patients were detected. The standardized prevalence rate of MCI was 27.27% by the age composition of the population in Nanning in 2010. Single factor analysis showed that there were significant differences(all P<0.05)in the prevalence of MCI in different groups by age, education, occupation, exercise time, sleep time, number of reading, community activities and housework. Multivariate analysis showed that old age, primary education level, occupation of farmer/migrant worker and enterprise personnel/worker were the risk factors of MCI, adequate sleep time, moderate exercise time and reading times were the protective factors of MCI (all P<0.05). Conclusions The prevalence rate of MCI is high among the elderly in Nanning. The elderly with advanced age, primary school education, occupation as farmer/peasant-worker and enterprise personnel/workerare at high risk of developing MCI. Effective measures should be taken as soon as possible to prevent the occurrence and development of MCI.

ABSTRACT

A CdTe/ZnSe quantum-dot submicrobead ( QBs ) , which exhibited fluorescence intensity approximately 2800-fold stronger than that of single quantum dots, was conjugated with the anti-histidine rich protein( HRP )-Ⅱ mAbs using N-( 3-( Dimethylamino ) propyl )-N'-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride ( EDC ) method as fluorescence probe. The goat anti-HRP-Ⅱ polyclonal antibodies and donkey anti-mouse polyclonal antibodies were sprayed onto the nitrocellulose membrane as test line and control line, respectively. The resultant fluorescence probes were introduced to the immunochromatographic strip for the quantitative determination of Plasmodium falciparum. For determination of Plasmodium falciparum in serum, the QBs based immunochromatographic strips exhibited a good dynamic linear range from 5 . 8 Parasite/μL to 8010 Parasite/μL with a limit of detection of 5. 8 Parasite/μL. The detection time of the proposed QBs based immunochromatographic strips for each sample was only 15 min. Moreover, the recovery rates of the intra-and inter-assay ranged from 93. 0% to 111. 9%, and 98. 3% to 115. 1% respectively, while the relative standard deviations ( RSDs) of intra-and inter-assay were below 5%.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To define cut-off values of plasma amino-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-ProBNP) for the diagnosis of congenital heart failure (CHF) and evaluate the importance of plasma NT-ProBNP measurement in the assessment of cardiac function prior to heart surgery in infants with congenital heart disease (CHD).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Plasma levels of NT-proBNP were measured in 120 infants with CHD before heart surgery and in 100 age-matched healthy infants between June 2010 and June 2013. The data were stratified based on the presence or absence of CHF in the whole group of CHD infants and on age (i.e., <1 year and ≥1 year) and time (i.e., before surgery) within the subgroup of CHF infants.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Of the 120 infants with CHD, 41 met the criteria for CHF defined in the Ross Classification for Heart Failure in Infants. The cut-off values of plasma NT-ProBNP were ≥498 ng/L for infants of all ages, 557 ng/L for <1 year age group and 452 ng/L for ≥1 year age group, respectively, in the 41 CHF patients. In CHF infants, plasma NT-proBNP was significantly decreased after protecting of cardiac function (P<0.001).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The cut-off values of plasma NT-ProBNP for CHF differ between infants <1 year and infants ≥1 year. Moreover, plasma NT-ProBNP can be used as an additional parameter in the preoperative assessment of cardiac function in CHD infants.</p>

ABSTRACT

The stomachs of the yellow-billed grosbeaks were examined by means of light microscopy. The mucous membrane of the proventriculus presented many folds and sulci. The sulci were lined by simple columnar cells with basal nuclei and clear acidophilic cytoplasm. The proventriculus glands were constituted by many round or elliptical glandular lobules. The sulci and the collecting duct of compound tubular glands showed an intense positive reaction in PAS and AB stain. The gizzard was characterized by an internal abrasion-resistant lining cuticle and a thick muscular layer. The cuticle, gizzard glands and muscular layer in two sides were thicker than those in the cranial and caudal.
